Intro to Marketing

April 29-May 3, 2024

Lesson Plans

Monday-

Students will start their creation of their board game

Will show examples of what has been created in the past

They will have a rubric to follow in relation to what all components it needs to have, etc.

With the marketing board game, here are some guidelines I try to make them follow:

  1. Must relate to marketing (some way, some how)  I tell them they can go back through our teams accounts and pull ideas from our notes/PPTS,etc. to get ideas of their board game topic.
  2. Board game must have a NAME
  3. They MUST make their game pieces
  4. Board game MUST NOT be a replica of an already existing game  ***I tell them they cannot steal another game concept/idea/looks.  They must be original.  I DO tell them they can use bits and pieces of other board games and "melt" together to make it their own.
  5. The game MUST have instructions.  They must be typed out and printed off.  I always tell them it's like making a grilled cheese.  If you leave our important steps, you can't enjoy the grilled cheese.  I always tell them they need to pretend that no one knows anything about their game and make it easy enough for middle school students to read/understand instructions.
  6. The game MUST be able to actually be played.  After every group has finished their board game, they will rotate and each group will play the other classmates game.  They will also have a document they will answer about each group's game (kind of like a survey)
  7. Teammates must work together and everyone must work on the project.  Points will be deducted if we see anyone not participating.

Please add/take away anything you don't like.  I have examples of board games that we will show them.  I give every group a ½ of a poster board.

Tuesday-

Continue working on board game with groups

Wednesday-

Continue working on board game

Thursday-

Continue working on board game

Friday-

Everyone should be finished with game and we will rotate through groups to play each other’s games and they will all rate them

Pick Franchise

Wednesday-

Watch The Founder (students will have questions they will answer as they watch the movie)

Thursday-

Finish up the movie (turn in questions for Homework grade or count as quiz grade)

Pick Franchise topic(if not done so already)

Friday-

Start working on the individual Franchise PPT

Students will work individually and they will create a PPT over the following questions:

** All of this information that I want on this PPT presentation does NOT need to be crammed onto 5 slides. Please make one slide for each bullet.  You will be working on this PPT for 4 days so we expect AMAZING presentations and information (especially since you have so long to work).  NO one will be doing the same food franchise so everyone will be working individually on this project.

These are the criteria for the FRANCHISE PowerPoint:

How much it costs to buy the franchise-

  • There is usually a franchise fee, separate and apart from the grand total of how much it would cost to build the business (land, actual building cost, etc.)

Where are they located-

  • Usually franchises are spread out all over the United States, as well as other countries
  • Where are they located in the US:  ex: are more in a certain state vs others
  • How many does the state of TN have
  • Where was the first location located

Where is the most successful franchise located-

  • Sometimes this can be the original location of the franchise but often times there is a certain city that has the most visitors or business (whatever you can find)
  • This also may be hard to find for some of the franchises you selected
    • If you can't find this information, replace it with some other information about the franchise

Pictures of the inside and out-

  • Example:  When you go inside a Chick-fil-a, they want you to have the best experience with their food, atmosphere and working staff.  You should be able to get the same nuggets and the same taste in ALL Chick-fil-a restaurants whether it's in California or Tennessee.  So, when you go inside the restaurant:
    • What does their dining area look like
    • If they have a playground, what does it look like
    • What does their order "window" look like inside
    • Do they have menus that are unique in design
    • Show pictures of their menu and if they have a mascot
  • Outside pictures include:
    • Drive-thru
    • Signage
    • Actual picture of building

Fun facts about the franchise creator-

  • Who was the creator/inventor of the business
  • Are they still alive today, and if not, who is now in charge
  • What year did they start the business
  • What was their background (what did they do before opening the business or did it start out as something else before being renamed)
  • When did they branch out into the franchise business (what this means is….did they first start out as a small family owned business (how long was it open before as a "not franchised" food establishment and then when did they decide to franchise that business)
  • Do they have a family-who are they?
  • Are they partners with anyone to help run the business
  • How much did it start to open their first business
  • Etc.

Intro to Marketing

March 18-22, 2024

Lesson Plans

Monday-

Students will do their own research on Amazon

They will pick 4 products that they like/want to purchase/have purchased in the past

They will create a chart that looks like below:

Product Name

Cost of Product

Something they could improve for their product

1.

2.

3.

They will have a total of 4 charts (of their 4 different products)

*They will pick their product and scroll down to the 1-5 star reviews.  They want to find things that could be fixed/improved about that specific product.  Ex:  The soles of the shoes come apart/not glued well enough

If the product doesn’t have any negative reviews, they need to pick another product.

**The negative things they are finding would help benefit the company in making a better product or happier customers.

ONCE THEY FINISH, introduce how we will be doing our own research assignment.

Students will have 3 topics to research (they will be either in a group or they can work alone)

***YOUR GOAL:  is not to persuade anyone on your topic.  You are clearly presenting information and getting raw results (without your opinion)

  1. Should LA wear uniforms?
  2. Should LA have an hour lunch break?
  3. Should LA go to school Monday-Thursday and get off on Fridays?

These questions are issues we would like answers to.  That’s where the students come in to play.  They will be doing the following to find an answer:

Monday:  They will draw out their research topic

They will get in their groups and open a word document and share it with their partner.

The document will have their title/topic at top, then under title, the group name(s)

The document today will be more “unorganized” and can be more bullet form or random outline.  Doesn’t have to be “pretty” today.  You are going to be looking up/researching your topic.  All these topics are real and have other school districts/states doing these exact things.  Find relevant info about your topic from your research that can then help you create your survey questions.

Tuesday-

Each group will finish up their research/background info and make it “prettier” on the document.  More organized and informative on what they found in their research.

Students will then start creating their survey questions (must have a total of 15 questions). These questions, again, need to be neutral and no biased opinion.  You are strictly posing questions that you can get an answer for your “issue’ that was posed at beginning of the week.

Teacher will show you the format on how you should type the questions (so we can get multiple sets of questions on one sheet of paper, so we aren’t wasting a lot of paper).

Wednesday-

Survey needs to be sent to teacher and they will get printed off for you.  You will be required to give the survey to 40 peers (no teachers and it has to be a student at LA).  YOU will NOT have your Marketing classmates to take the survey since they are doing the same topics as you.  Must be someone outside of this class.

I suggest giving the survey to a friend, watching them take the survey (don’t persuade their answers) and have them give back right then (if possible).

Thursday-

Students will still be getting results from surveys.

Have them tally their results and create a chart of their results.

Friday-

Discuss findings of everyone’s surveys.  Class discussion on how it went, what getting survey results was like, etc.

Make recommendations for “solving” the issue/problem

Friday-

  • Students will 6 products on Amazon they are interested in-trying to make each product different.  Ex:  don’t pick all make-up products or electronic items (it could be something you already own, have used before or something you have your eye on).
  • They will then go to the comments section of the product you selected
  •  You will then find things that customers commented about that they would change, like to see differently, the price of the product is too high/low, the quality of the products, complaints about the product, things that broke easily, product caused harm, etc.
  • You will list those things you see about the product in a bulleted form

Please list your information below as follows: (use the same format)

  1. Product you selected/researched & Picture of item
  2. Price it is sold for
  3. All the things you find that would be beneficial to the market research dept. (pretend you are the person who created this product: essentially, make a list of all the things you would want to know people said about your product that could help you make it a better product for your customers)

Make sure it all flows and makes sense.  DO NOT number your answers.  It should all be in paragraph form.

Questions:

Where do they see most of advertisements? *be specific: which social media platform or TV, etc.

Do they “act” on the advertisements or do they completely ignore them? And why do you act/ignore them?

      • Student will have a part of a burger taped to their back
      • Students can’t talk and have to make a loaded burger in correct order
    • Talking behind your Back game
      • Each person writes his/her name on a piece of paper lightly in pencil; then help one another tape the piece of paper on each persons back (NAME NOT SHOWING). Using (washable) markers, each person must go around the room and write something about that person on their back. (Participants need to be instructed that the comment must be positive - funny is okay too, but keeping the messages positive is essential.) The leader then removes all the papers and lays them out for everyone to view. How well do you think you know yourself or what others think about you? What would they say behind YOUR back? After reading them, participants may predict which one they think may have been on their back. Then, everyone can turn them over and find their own, and hopefully keep it, feeling great about what others had to say about them “behind their back”.
    • Being observant
      • Student will get a partner and stand back to back
      • Each will have a pad of paper and number 1-10
      • These questions will be asked out loud and they must answer individually about their partner
        • Is your partners ears pierced?
        • What color is their hair?
        • What is your partners name?
        • Are they left or right handed?
        • What color are their eyes?
        • Do they wear glasses?
        • Does your partner carry a backpack?

(Participants need to be instructed that the comment must be positive - funny is okay too, but keeping the messages positive is essential.) The leader then removes all the papers and lays them out for everyone to view. How well do you think you know yourself or what others think about you? What would they say behind YOUR back? After reading them, participants may predict which one they think may have been on their back. Then, everyone can turn them over and find their own, and hopefully keep it, feeling great about what others had to say about them “behind their back”.

Intro to Marketing

October 31-November 4, 2022

Lesson Plans

Monday-standard 15 financial concepts

*Students will need to make sure they have their career PPT turned in for grade

Begin by asking students if they know what a “bucket list” is.

Explain that it is a list of goals one wants to accomplish in life, like climbing Mt. Everest or writing a novel.

Ask students what would go on their lists, and give them five minutes to reflect and to write a bucket list in teams

  1. Invite students to share from their lists and record some of the items with a clear financial component on the board (e.g., go to college, visit Paris).

Ask students what these goals have in common and discuss how money can help us achieve some goals.

  1. Next, discuss which of the goals can be reached the fastest and why. Challenge small groups of students to sort the goals into three categories: short-term (requires less than six months to achieve), medium-term (less than a year) and long-term (longer than a year). Have students explain their reasoning

As a class, discuss some of the factors that go into categorizing short-term, medium-term and long-term financial goals. Explain that goals may be categorized by the life stages when they will likely be accomplished and by the amount of money required (goals that require less money may also take less time to achieve). 5. Choose one of the financial goals shared in the “Investigate” segment and discuss possible steps students might take in reaching that goal (e.g., saving allowance, gifts, salary and responsible spending). 6. Help students to see the difference between needs and wants by asking them to discuss whether any of their recent purchases were items they needed or wanted. Identify common “needs,” such as clothing and food and “wants,” such as lattes and designer jeans. 7. Discuss how needs and wants relate to one another: What happens if you spend all of your money on things you want? What if an unexpected “need” prevents you from saving for a “want”? Can students think of strategies for balancing the two (e.g., making a budget with spending categories)

Start PPT over financial concepts and terminology

*do notetaker

Tuesday-

Finish PPT over financial concepts (if we don’t finish)

Students will do webquest over financial conepts

Wednesday-

  • To start, students may watch and discuss the Life’s an Adventure video (link below). On a blank sheet of paper, students should record their thoughts into four quadrants labeled (1) Dream Jobs & Careers, (2) Dream Activities, (3) Dream Destinations, and (4) Nightmares; the nightmares section may include jobs, destinations, and activities that would not interest them. Allow students to share their dreams and nightmares.
  • Have students identify a couple of interests that they would like to have in their future job. Ask students which interests they might want to keep as hobbies. For example, if one of their dreams is to travel to a number of foreign countries, do they want to have this interest in their work life, personal life, or both? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each option?
  • Once students have identified a few dreams and nightmares, have students begin working on the “Define Your VISion” (pp. 6–7) and “What is Your Dream Job?” (p. 2–4) pages in the workbook
