  • Do you think you would pay more for a 1964 Corvette or a 2004 (assuming they are both in excellent condition)?
  • Which costs more, diamonds or gravel?

·         

Ask students why they think some items are more expensive than others. Try to lead the discussion so that students realize that rare things like superstars, antique automobiles, and diamonds are in short supply. So that students think about scarcity, you might ask questions such as, "How many superstars are there in the league, and how many average players are there?" Consequently, students should realize that the cost for the special items is usually higher, because they are harder to acquire.

Extension:
You may wish to tell students the following story about construction nails. Long ago, when houses made of wood were first being built, nails were very expensive. It seems funny to us today, but it's true. Each nail had to be made by hand, pounded into shape by a blacksmith. Though it wasn't difficult, it took time. Even a good blacksmith wouldn't be able to make more than a few hundred nails in an entire day. On the other hand, there are machines today that can manufacture thousands of nails an hour. Because they are so much easier to acquire now-that is, because there is a greater supply of nails-the price has dropped substantially.

  • SUPPLY AND DEMAND AUCTION EXAMPLES

    • Tell about safety test

    • How to Play
    • In this icebreaker, students are prompted to either line up in some particular order (by birthday, for example) or gather in “blobs” based on something they have in common (similar shoes, for example). What’s great about this game is that it helps students quickly discover things they have in common. It’s also ridiculously easy: Students don’t have to come up with anything clever, and they can respond to every question without thinking too hard about it. This game keeps students moving and talking, and it builds a sense of belonging and community in your classroom.
    • Here are some sample prompts you can use for this game:
    • Line up in alphabetical order by your first names.
    • Line up in alphabetical order by your last names.
    • Gather with people who have the same eye color as you.
    • Gather with people who get to school in the same way as you (car, bus, walk).

  • Teacher will go over “definition” of marketing”:
    • The activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. It involves the process of planning, pricing, promoting, selling and distributing ideas, goods, or services to create exchanges that satisfy customers.
    • Students will get in groups of 2
    • Teacher will explain that I will set a timer for 30 minutes
      • In those 30 minutes, students will get on their phones and they will look through all their social media sites they are “connected” to.
      • ½ way through activity, I will ask students to switch to another social media sight to get a different perspective and see if new things were being marketing to them (they will put asterisk/check by the ones that have been featured twice or more)
      • They have to scroll through their feed and every time they see something being marketed to them they will write down what information it was
    • When time is up, we will compare different groups and what they were being marketed
    • Class discussion: were they eye-catching? Do you think it cost them a lot of money to create ad?

They will sign on to their computers and were asked to compare and contrast these two websites:

Lesson Plans

Monday-

*Student will finish up international business PPT and turn in for test grade

Students will read article and do GIST summary

Tuesday-Standard 32

  • Students were given a really “bad” resume titled Sally Sad and they had to get in groups of 3 and figure out all the bad things her resume has on it, etc.
  • We then discussed as a group and went over what all was wrong with it
  • Then the students stayed in their groups of 3 and were given a resume packet.
    • In this packet was 6-8 resumes. They were given a handout titled sample resume discussion
    • They had to divide the resumes up (so each had 2-3 each) and then pick apart the resume (finding the good/bad/ugly) about each one
    • They highlighted those things to discuss later
    • They have specific questions to answer about the resumes

Wednesday-Standard 32

  • Students will finish up reviewing and answering questions about the resumes
  • We will discuss as a class what they came up with (and turn in their answers for a homework grade)
  • We will then watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2Yb3xk9S_k The 10 Biggest Resume No-No's
  • Then take notes from PPT
  • Once we are finished with that assignment, we will then
    • Can you put everything about yourself - your life story - on a single sheet of paper? You probably will have to do that at some point in your life. A résumé is a piece of paper that tells a prospective employer who you are, what you’ve done, and why they should hire you.  Some businesses just want a completed application but the résumé brings extra attention to the application. For many jobs, you’ll probably need a résumé. The information you need to complete a job application is similar to that of a résumé . But an employer doesn’t need to know absolutely all there is to know about you. They need to know that you have the skills, knowledge, and personality traits needed for a particular job.  Can you pick out which of your many skills are most important for different positions?  Can you present them in such a way that the prospective employer can quickly and easily evaluate your qualifications?
    • Write your own résumé. Put everything you have learned (in school, in extracurricular activities, in volunteer or paid jobs) into a few short paragraphs that would convince a prospective employer to hire you.  Write down everything you can think of about yourself. List every job you’ve ever done (real jobs, household chores, extra jobs at school such as hall monitor, line leader, or crossing guard.) List education – schools, grades, special classes.  List your extracurricular school activities (sports teams, band, clubs, debate team).  List your activities outside of school (camping, skateboarding, volunteer work). List any awards you’ve won, honors you have received, or special recognition. 3. While there are a number of formats that can be used for a résumé, the sample résumé will be used since students have little work experience.
  • Students will be given the resume checklist, writing tips, sample resume and resume they will fill out themselves
    • They will then spend time working on their individual resume (hand written for now) then we will clean it up and type it in a template resume document

Thursday-Standard 32

Students will create a infographic on tips for resumes

  • Finish up resume writing (if they didn’t get it done Wednesday)
    • Students will then do this short activity:
      • Describe for students a scenario in which a friend is applying for a job. They know the friend’s Facebook page contains content a potential employer might view negatively.  For example, it contains photos of the friend acting immaturely, and it is filled with grammar and spelling errors.  Have students write a paragraph on what they might say to their friend.
      • Then have them explore what LinkIn.com is. It is a business social networking site.  Have students go to linkin.com (if it will let them) and then explain some of its features.
      • Then have them describe ways in which marketing professionals might use linkin.com to advance their careers.

Marketing and Management 1

October 16-20, 2023

Lesson Plans

Monday-

  • Supply and demand (Standard 13)
    • Do candy activity
  • How much is superstar athletes paid (LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Stef Curry, etc.) verse or compared to an “average” player?

  • Do PPT and notes with notetaker
  • Play marketing bingo with them, time permitting

Tuesday-

  • Students will read an article about fingerlings
  • https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/09/business/fingerling-toy.html
  • Have students then type 1 page paper (double spaced) on an experience that they or someone they know, have experienced, regarding supply and demand of a popular item that they were wanting. Also, write from past holiday seasons, what have been the hot ticket items (what year was it) and have them find if those items went for super expensive/super cheap at the time of their popularity and when/if they died out.

Using their knowledge of the Law of Supply and Demand, and the Hula Hoops Case Study, ask students to view the Facebook video, One Lucky Little Girl again individually or show it as a whole class. Ask students:

  1. What does this little girl’s reaction tell you about the market for Fingerlings?
  2. What part of the market is at play here? Demand? Supply?

Have students form groups and read the first New York Times article, How the Fingerling Caught On (Robot Grip and All) as 2017’s Hot Toy. Have them only read until they get to “Walmart Sets the Stage” in the article. Using demand and supply graphs, have them show what would happen to the market for Fingerlings when they became “the” toy. They should show a market with one supply curve and two demand curves, the right-most reflecting the increase in demand.

Ask them what they would expect with respect to the market price for Fingerlings. They should answer that it will increase. Now have them read the rest of the article. Still in groups, have them show on their graphs what happens when Walmart caps the price at $15. They should draw a horizontal line at $15 on their graph, representing a shortage. Ask, if price can’t increase, what happens, which is a shortage. Ask, what are some ways that WowWee can address the shortage? – increase production, ignore the $15 price cap. Ask what are the risks of WowWee allowing the shortage to continue? – People get tired of waiting, grow disinterested in the product if it’s too hard to find.

Have students, still in groups, read the second New York Times article How the Bot Stole Christmas: Toys Like Fingerlings Are Snapped Up and Resold. Ask students what the presence of bot-buying does to the market for Fingerlings? It increases demand even further, and increases the price on the black market. Explain that anytime there is a shortage of something, it opens up the possibility of creating a black market for that product, or knock-off products. Ask if they can think of other examples of shortages leading to black markets or substitute products.

Individual Activity

Have students draw D&S of the thing they thought of that they wanted in the warm-up activity. Show what happened when it got close to the holidays. Did the price go up? Discuss as a class.

Assessment

Have students think about something they have wanted and the factors that affected the market for it. Have students complete an exit ticket answering the questions below in their journals or on a piece of paper. Students must hand-in their work before the end of the period.

  • Was it a hot item?
  • Did they get it?
  • Why or why not?
  • Were their parents willing to pay the price? Not willing?
  • Could they not find it (i.e., shortage)?

What’s great about this game is that it helps students quickly discover things they have in common. It’s also ridiculously easy: Students don’t have to come up with anything clever, and they can respond to every question without thinking too hard about it. This game keeps students moving and talking, and it builds a sense of belonging and community in your classroom.
    • Here are some sample prompts you can use for this game:
    • Line up in alphabetical order by your first names.
    • Line up in alphabetical order by your last names.

Marketing and Management 1

April 24-28, 2023

Lesson Plans

Monday-

  • Using online employment resources, conduct a job search for a marketing position. Choose two postings and create a Venn diagram illustrating the unique qualifications for each job as well as the common qualifications between them.

  • Finish up resume writing

February 6-10, 2023

Lesson Plans

Monday-

Friday-

  • Supply and demand (Standard 13)
    • Do candy activity
  • How much is superstar athletes paid (LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Stef Curry, etc.) verse or compared to an “average” player?
  • Do you think you would pay more for a 1964 Corvette or a 2004 (assuming they are both in excellent condition)?
  • Which costs more, diamonds or gravel?

·         ·

  • Do PPT and notes with notetaker
  • Play marketing bingo with them, time permitting

Define marketing and describe the marketing benefits derived from each economic utility (form, time, place, possession, information).  Discuss how each benefit adds value to products and services.

  • Have students get in groups of 3 and define marketing on note cards. Then have one student come write their groups definition on board

Marketing and Management 1

December 5-9, 2022

Lesson Plans

Monday

  • Finish up resume writing

September 12-16, 2022

Lesson Plans

Monday-

  • Benefits vs features lesson (standard 20)
  • Have them go to the collaborative space that is titled Benefits vs Features definition
  • Students will write down what they think a benefit is and what a feature is on a sheet of paper
  • They will then take notes from PPT
  • They will then be told to read article from website:
  • Once students have read article, give them the benefits vs features handout/worksheet about Tahoe and Yukon to complete
  • Once finished, have them pick out 5 products and have them compare just like they did on the worksheet

·        ·

  • Do PPT and notes with notetaker
  • Play marketing bingo with them, time permitting

    • Tell a little about myself (show PowerPoint if it’s kids I have not had in a while)
    • Hand out papers that need to be signed/go over standards
    • Tell about safety test
    • Play ice breaker game
      • Would you rather game
    • Blobs and Lines
    • Line up in order of your birthdays, from January 1 through December 31.
    • Line up in order of how many languages you speak.

Standard 1:

Define marketing and describe the marketing benefits derived from each economic utility (form, time, place, possession, information).  Discuss how each benefit adds value to products and services.

  • Have students get in groups of 3 and define marketing on note cards. Then have one student come write their groups definition on board

  • Discussion was held about the two websites and how the marketing of them were completely opposites

This will lead into how different our marketing strategies are and how they try to market to everyone

No School Election Day

Wednesday-Standard 32

Thursday-Standard 32

Friday-Standard 32

  • Finish up resume writing

  • They will then take notes from PPT
  • They will then be told to read article from website:
  • Once students have read article, give them the benefits vs features handout/worksheet about Tahoe and Yukon to complete
  • Once finished, have them pick out 5 products and have them compare just like they did on the worksheet

Tuesday-

  • Supply and demand (Standard 13)
    • Do candy activity
  • How much is superstar athletes paid (LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Stef Curry, etc.) verse or compared to an “average” player?
  • Do you think you would pay more for a 1964 Corvette or a 2004 (assuming they are both in excellent condition)?
  • Which costs more, diamonds or gravel?

·         ·

  • Do PPT and notes with notetaker
  • Play marketing bingo with them, time permitting

Wednesday-

Marketing and Management 1

January 10-14, 2022

Lesson Plans

Monday-

Standard 1:

Define marketing and describe the marketing benefits derived from each economic utility (form, time, place, possession, information).  Discuss how each benefit adds value to products and services.

  • Have students get in groups of 3 and define marketing on note cards. Then have one student come write their groups definition on board

Tuesday-

    • Class discussion: were they eye-catching? Do you think it cost them a lot of money to create ad?

They will sign on to their computers and were asked to compare and contrast these two websites:

  • Discussion was held about the two websites and how the marketing of them were completely opposites
  • This will lead into how different our marketing strategies are and how they try to market to everyone

    • This video will lead up to how vital making sure you look at and focus on the product/brand

    • Line up in order of how many languages you speak.

    • Gather with people who have the same favorite season as you.
  • Explain class rules, expectations, where things are located in room, bathroom chart, phones, trash, etc.
